5 Second Rule

5 Second Rule

5 seconds can make a huge difference.

In that tiny amount of time you can change the whole course of your day.

Do you get out of bed, or do you hit snooze?
Do you do the workout or back out?

As a swimmer, I DREADED getting in the water.  Seems oxymoronic, but if you ask a lot of swimmers, it’s really the worst part.

You know it’s cold.
You know you have to do it.
You know you are going to spend the next 2 hours immersed in chlorine.

So you begin to count down.

5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1…in you go.

Something about putting a time limit to it tricks your brain and allows your body to just do.

There’s no thoughts, just simple numbers until “Blast-Off”…when you create the action that you otherwise would probably put off.

And then you do the countdown again.  And again.  And again.  And then a month goes by and you realize you stopped counting down and are just doing.

You look back and see how different your life has changed.  All from simply counting down and ACTING instead of letting your mind tell you “just 5 more minutes…”, “it’s okay if you skip today…” or any other deceitful lie that your brain is trying to protect you from the uncomfortable.  But when you look back on all those days, weeks, months, or years you’ve put stuff off, you realize how much more uncomfortable that has made you than if you had actually just gone after whatever you wanted to in the first place.

Or at least you would be somewhere else.   But you wouldn’t be here…and here is an uncomfortable place.

Regardless of whether you are striving for greatness or trying to get up the motivation to not hit snooze, you are uncomfortable in your situation.  The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can realize that action alleviates any anxiety that uncomfortable causes.

So, trick your brain, countdown from 5 and BLAST OFF!

Because I’d much rather be working towards something than putting off life.  Need to blast off your health and fitness? Come in for a free trial workout >> go.fit-tribe.com/free-session
